Hello

I was searching for any advice / tips on this. My ray is often on the glass and comes to the top to feed, I have been feeding him whitebait and such from the top.. is this an ok position to hand feed from? I have little experience doing it, and don't want to push anything too far.

Cheers

Its ok even if u hold a piece of food and have ur hand in the water..
I feed my rays this way all the time..
No sudden movements so u wont startle the ray..
Basically.. Hand with piece of food in water against glass..
Let them ray cup over ur hand to get the food..

how can you hand feed pellets which are the best food for rays

also why bother the rays will think every time you hand goes in the tank its food which will be a pain when doing tank stuff

also why risk it its best to cut down all risks of getting stung

Very good point bout the rays associating your hand with food.

First off.. When u hand feed a ray.. Its mouth is probably 1' away from the barb..
Second.. Rays wont sting for no reason.. Unless pressure is applied over ribs area..
Thirdly.. I walk around my Breeding tub scrubing everywhere.. I have nvr been stung for the past ten years..
Lastly.. Its no harm interacting with an animal that is smart enough to remember..

You can't explain this to T1, he's always a big naysayer about something he's not even doing. Seriously. Search for hand feeding and there he'll be saying "I don't do this so it's clearly something I don't know anything about but here are all the reasons you shouldn't do it". And then a bunch of us will make the same points over and over.

Why do you think he's talking about pellets? I don't understand? I re-read the OP's post and he doesn't mention pellets at all? Whitebait sounds like a fish fillet to me, maybe even a whole fish? It for sure doesn't sound like a pellet? I apologize if english is your second language.

I hand feed Tilapia fillet all the time but I cut it in long strips :) I keep my hand out of the water too. How would you hand feed a pellet with out getting bit? It's not fair to the fish, how is it going to be able to tell your fingers from the pellet? Just an odd question?

To the OP: Hand feeding is fun! Keeping fish should be fun, so yes, hand feed and have fun :)

+1 to that brother..
Also I disagree with pellets are best food for Rays..
I thought we were supposed give a variety to our pets..??
How about T1 try having Chicken fillets for the rest of his life..
That would be the best food for humans..??
I regulate between Night crawlers.. whitebait.. sliver sides.. Prawns.. Live.. Red Wrigglers.. Tilapia.. MP.. Algae Chips..
A staple and mixed diet.. Keeps my rays pumped and healthy.. :D

Don't even get T1 started on pellets.:) Just go back and search about pellets vs frozens or other types of foods and you will understand his pellets remark.
I hand feed my rays occasionally. Always move slowly and let them come to you. Its just like target feeding, once they learn that food is offered this way they will come to your hand.
