It is the freak occurance of stumbling across someone that isn't like this that allows me to carry on. Well, even if I was the only one, I'd still be doing it, but it sure gives a boost. The people that get off their arses and does something over talking about doing something are too far and few between.

I very well understand....

As Aldo Leopold (My Steve Irwin and inspiration) said very well "An ecological education is living alone in a world of wounds"...

I like that, well at least the saying... not the reality. Sir Attenborough was my inspiration, Steve built on it and was my fine tuning.

i thought steve was great. he may have put his live in danger a few too many times, but he surely knew the price he could pay for doing so. some of the things he did were idiotic and no handling skills should have been learned from his show, but it was entertaining. people should have the common sense to know not to do what he did...at least in the manner he did it.

i too am very experienced in handling venemous herps. i've spent several years capturing, sexing, and collecting other valuable data to help conserve eastern timber rattlesnakes in pennsylvania. i have captured and released over 100 specimens of timber rattlesnakes alone and i was equally cautious capturing each and every one.

can you make a living doing things like that,im in kern county,i know we got alot of herps here, last time hikin the canyon my girlfriend steped right over a mohavi green, lit that beauty right up,just wondered how to make a job of it,ive kept and bread many herps, lots of handeling, just curious.

Well hot damn Jordan... you never told me that one...I'm quite involved with Timbers myself...I'll have to pick your brain on the Penn. populations later. In particular I would like to know habitat characteristics and circadian movements...

I'll get a hold of you about this later.

:D they are my all time favorite animal! i have been relatively inactive the past two years...due to my work schedule (my real job)...:( , but would still love to discuss this sometime.

And it is this fact that makes me sick to my stomach everyday...The disconnect of the Children and young adults today with the Land, ecology and nature is really sick. Everything has to be egocentric and for personal gratification or excitement in some way. The idea that Nature is best expressed on Animal planet rather than in reality is a problem for realistic wildlife and ecologic conservation.

I kind of understand. I don't even work with wild animals professionally (Yet..planning on doing something along those lines but not even sure where to start), and trying to explain to most people ANYTHING about conservation is extremely frustrating. I hear comments along the lines "What's the point?" and "It's just a stupid fish/snake/bug/pick a random animal".

I think the problem is that most parents don't get all that involved with their kids in the first place, and as far as education about ANY subject people would rather sit their kids in front of the TV. Kids themselves are usually going to pick the shows that seem flashy and entertaining. The parents have to get kids interested and excited in stuff that actually expands their mind, and in general that just doesn't happen.
I remember when I was a kid my dad would take me to zoos, aquariums, all kinds of places and when I asked questions he'd find me the information or ask one of the staff. I'll admit I did learn a lot from TV, but on PBS documentaries and such that my parents sat down with me and watched. We actually went outdoors (not something a lot of kids do now adays I think) and looked at birds, snakes, bugs, frogs, lizards, etc., tried to identify them just for the heck of it, because it's a fun way to expand your knowledge.
This is the main reason I'm so interested in native wildlife, I had people around me to get me interested in it.

Sorry for the slight rant there, I was just trying to think back on what got me interested in this kind of stuff and why a lot of people aren't.
