i would stay away from feeder fish that you did not breed yourself as there is a very high possibility of them passing parasites on to your cichlids, i would stick with insects or frozen stuff

+1 So many people ask about feeders, whenever I am at the lfs and I over hear people talking about feeders I usually but in and tell them to get a 10 gallon and breed their own feeders. I usually explain about parasites and tell them how easy and inexpensive it is. It's pretty surprising how many people really like the idea.

My whole deal with feeders is I am more comfortable feeding fish that I breed because I know exactly where they came from and what kind of condition they are in. I don't have to quarintine and above all I don't have to worry about them effecting my fishes health.

FIRST YOU TAKE YOUR CAPS LOCK OFF OTHERWISE YOUR SCREAMING AHHHHHH!!!!! AND YOU WILL SCARE YOUR FISH

I always had luck using freeze dried jumbo krill to hand feed fish. I think they even like that stuff better than live insects in my experience. The scent entices them alot and works for any cichlid i owned. Plus it basically cuts that time of sitting with them while they eat and getting closer into like 2 or 3 days instead of a week or 2.

I use to use whole shrimp when hand feeding my Oscar. He was 15inches long and would take down a whole jumbo shrimp. I usually removed most of the shell to cut down on mess, but he would almost jump completely out of the water when he saw me with the shrimp.
Frozen bloodworms might be hard since they are tiny and come in blocks. The convicts will love them though. Freeze Dried Krill are good as well for hand feeding.

Sounds like they're just shy. I can't get near the tank without getting challenged. I've still got some sub 1" convicts that'll swim up and attack my hand and arm as if asking "Hey bish, where's my snack?" They'll actually chase bits of dietrus up the inside of the siphon... -_-

Any safe food that's long and threadlike would work - tubifex, julienned lettuce, etc. Just a matter of them making the first move. You can't chase them with it.
