I am considering buying a sump pump backup battery that will keep my 1,200 gph pump going during power failures. It would operate for about 8 hours. These batteries are quite expensive and I am now wondering if this is the way to go. Would a battery powered aerator be adequate? I suppose I could have one aerator in the tank and one under the bio media in the sump.

Curious what others have done to manage extended power failures.

how long do you typical power outage last?

How big a tank are we talking about? How heavily stocked?Valuble?Depending on these answers what you need could vary from a $15 battery pump to a generator.

I have five turtles and about 15 or so Cory catfish in a fairly large tank (8'l x 3'w x 17"h)holding about 180 gallons of water and another 20 or so gallons in the sump.

personally i run a honda eu1000 during all power outages to power up my critical tanks..

it can run the following tanks with all equipment including heaters; 2x75s, 29, 45, 125

...power outages are usually very short, less than an hour, but we have had a one that lasted a few hours and one that lasted over 12 hours.

A few hours is no big deal, the battery airpumps are fine.If you had regular outages over 6 hours get a generator for a tank that big.
For the once in a while long outage the battery pumps and if you can move the biomedia to the tank for the duration.

The way to look at it is like it's insurance. Some things that are of great value to you should be insured. Just like your car or your house. Buying a generator could be considered like buying an awesome insurance policy that your tank will be in top shape during power outages. If it's worth saving the money to get a bunch of battery powered air pumps and move the biomedia around, then go for the pumps, it's just a cheaper insurance policy.

those backups are wonderful since power outtages dont always happen when everyone is home

ive been meaning to pick one up for 6 months... one of these days..
