Hello

I have just bought a bigger tank, for my fish and i though i would try something a little bit different..( well they wife insisted!)

The tank measures 90x45x45cm and i had this idea..

Fill the tank up to around 30-35cm in height and use the space above the water to some how place some plants that grows "down", together with some tree roots, that will hopefully give the impression of a river bank...

Is this idea doable??..it it is what kind of plants can i use?..i would like to have plants from india..or SE asia.

Any tips or info is greatly appreciated

I think there is an MFKer that has some plants growing above his/her tank. Can't find the thread now, but the plants were growing hydroponically (sp?) above the tank and it seemed to be doing well.

Good luck with it either way.

Mangroves would work, but you would most likely have to buy seed pods and they are slow growers. You could also use a potted house tree behind the tank and let the leaves and branches dangle close to or into the water and put in some branches to resemble roots. I have seen this setup at an LFS and it looked pretty good. I guess you would have to research plants to see what could take partial immersion without harming your water.

Hello - do you want the roots to be in the water, too? If NOT, there's a lot you can do - such as Pothos pots hidden in back , with the vines hanging down.

I'm kinda confused to whether you are looking for plants that are marginal (grow partially submerged) or ones that are terrestrial (not in the water)?

If you are going for marginal, there are several plants that will work.
Brazilian swords, mondo grass, anubias species

Hi guys

Thanks for the replays, keep them coming.

What i want, is properly "house" plants?!, as santoury said, hang them on the back and let the wines "spill into the tank...
The roots i was talking about was drift wood..sorry if i was being unclear.

Any idea what plants would be suited for this??

Pothos, Spider Plants, Philodendrons (The vining ones anyway), Baby's Tears, Mints (Mentha ssp etc etc
