haps and tang cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, the simple answer is "quite a few", just keep in mind that # would correspond with the size of how many "adult" fish they grow into. I guess the key is keep fish from both lakes with the same temperament/aggression. Some hobbiest will tell you that the Tangs need a higher ph but WC's and adequate filtration are the answer for a healthy tank.

Post a list, let's see what you like?

heres some of each....

Ahli Electric Blue
Albino Taiwan Reef
Aristo Yellow Blaze (zimbawe rock
Azureus
Big Spot Hap
Black Fin Lethrinops
Borleyi Mbenji
Borleyi Red Fin
Buccochromis nototaenia
Super VC-10 Hap
Livingstonii
Blue Flash
Blue Lip Goby
Blue Orchid Livua
Cygnus
Cyprichromis Kasanga
Neolamprologus cylindricus
Orange Belly Brevis
Tiger Brevis
Hecqui Shell Dweller

The larger shellies and rock dwellers would probably be alright with mid-sized, non-predatory haps/peacocks/lethrinops... No way on the Nimbochromis or the Buccochromis.

I personally would not keep cyps with Malawi haps, but that's just my opinion. Too skittish and not very durable.

The only cases of mixed lakes that I have in my place are breeder cylindricus in with a group of large maylandi peacocks and Paracyps in with Ngara stuartgranti peacocks. Altolamprologus can also be good tankmates for Malawi cichlids.

I have heard of Cyrtacara moori being kept with groups of comparable-sized frontosa.

i guess it would be best to just keep from one lake or the other....i guess i just need to find the lake that has the most fish i like. gonna do more research on it.. thanks for the input.

I agree with not mixing the predatory haps with the small tangs, but as for others, it CAN be done... especially with a tank that large.

Ive kept Tropheus, Frontosa, and Calvus alongside Red Empress, Venustus, Fryeri, and Borleyi, not to mention with my Peacocks, Mbuna, Victorians, Jewel, and Kribensis all in a 125g

Care should be taken and you should always be ready to remove and rehome what doesnt fit

If you plan to go ahead with this, look forward to the maximum size of all of the fish, will any of the smaller fish fit in the largers' mouth? If so... re-think one of the options.... like the neolamp and livingstonii... not a good mix. Try and stay in the same size range

I guess it goes back to the answer of yes, you probably can keep a firemouth in neutral pH water with a Geophagus, a frontosa, a butterkoferi and a venustus, but why would you?

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but enjoy watching fish interacting with their own kind, exhibiting natural* behavior....

*As natural as you can get in a glass box, that is.

Just my opinion. Set up a 240 with breeding groups of large haps/peacocks/mbuna or a large Tang community tank. Neither will let you down.
