haps and tang cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad to see your might be switching back to cichlids. I would definitely put some big haps in that tank. I would recommend a Rostratus .Taylor talked me into ordering one and he was stunning although now my Venustus is boss of the tank and made my Rostratus color down.

^^^ hey man!! yeah i want some active colorful fish, im planning to build a tank after the first of the year and it will be housing some monster fish but i really miss the cichlids so i think the 240g will look great with them in it

Sounds good I have been buying smaller tanks lately for a soon to be fishroom outside I plan to breed several Malawi hap, mbuna and peacocks

I guess it goes back to the answer of yes, you probably can keep a firemouth in neutral pH water with a Geophagus, a frontosa, a butterkoferi and a venustus, but why would you?

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but enjoy watching fish interacting with their own kind, exhibiting natural* behavior....

*As natural as you can get in a glass box, that is.

Just my opinion. Set up a 240 with breeding groups of large haps/peacocks/mbuna or a large Tang community tank. Neither will let you down.

I do it for the variety :D

But in all honesty, I started Mixing and matching some time ago for informational purposes for customers who would shop at my store of what is and isnt compatable... I learned more from first hand experience than I could from a book. I use this knowledge to help out around here. The Could or Should factor always exists... Could you put Neolamps with Venustus or Frontosa?...........yes............Should you?..........no

I'm not a big fan of mixing lakes...it's not so much the dietary or water parameter issues, but rather the behavioural characteristics of haps say, vs mubana or specific tangs. In the long run, it's less of a headache just to keep large haps, with large haps.
