Hardiest Cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cichlids that come from an environment with a lot of temp fluctuations would be the best answer. Subtropical type cichlids like Australoheros and northern like Texas cichlids (cyanoguttatus). If you are talking about fish that you can throw in a tank and piss in then probably convicts, but I wouldnt recommend that at all. As long as we are talking about temp change and not upkeep then that is my best suggestion.

Nitrates being too high is more often that not the reason for cloudy eyes. I've got like 18+ tanks and I don't suppose I've always been kind to my fish with temp fluxuations. I've never intentionally done it but I've done 75% water changes more often than I'd like to admit where the tank started out at 80 degrees and ended up around 70-72. My South Americans just take it all in stride, never even caused a drop in appetite even during the water change :-)
I'd get an accurate liquid test kit and check your nitrates. My guess is they're very high, as in over 60 ppm.

Thanks everyone!

I just went to Big Al's and ordered better test kits.
I will keep an eye on the Nitrates.

I will also check into a pike or texas if things get worse.

very good. I am willing to be the nitrates are the issue ;) but worst case, Texas cichlids are awesome fish!

I think I'd probably use that as a handy excuse to get a Texas anyway....lol
Yep, yep. That's what I'd do.
