I think it is a matter of preference.
I like the old way of doing things, it takes time, and with larger fish it can be labor intensive, but I have not lost fish from cycling in decades.
Frankly, I think that losing fish because of ammonia or nitrite spike during cycling just means you got impatient.
As far as being scared out of the hobby, well, starting off slow and easy saves fish, educates beginners, and is easy on the budget. That encourages the newbies, instead of scaring them off.
