The mopani I got from my LSF said to soak until water stays clear...Well after 5 months of tannin stained water it's in the garden...tannins are bad just not the look I was going for...

lol yes Mopani is the leaching king of wood . I have it in backyard with fire mouths and after roughly 9 months now it is subsiding as far as turning water brown.

In a pond it doesn't matter but in a tank it does as you can only stand it so long.

When I lived in NY I ordered from http://www.aquariumdriftwood.com/driftwoo.htm

and not a drop of leaching plus driftwood actually sunk right away granted shipping sucks but if that is not an issue and like me you hate wood with slate base its a good place to order from.

I have a few chunks soaking in my pond now. They are not floating anymore so i should be getting them out before long or the pond will be frozen over.

I collected a bunch of pieces on Saturday. I plan on power washing and then boiling. All the pieces are too big for a pot so I plan to use a metal 55g drum filled w/ water over a fire. We'll see how that works.

i have read somewhere that any fruit trees are not safe for aquariums.. and of course grapevine.. but i dont know about any others.

My pieces are to big to boil. i do sand blast them to get to solid wood and do not have many problems besides a little trimming to make them fit.

Great idea! Please p.m. me when you get done with the details on how that worked out for you.

I've picked up several pieces from the local river mouth. I go during low tide to find my pieces.

I'm trying to get enough to fill my 240G free.

All of mine are way to big to soak in anything other then the 240. I have no idea what types of wood they are either. I might rent a sand blaster or pressure washer to get rid of any rotten wood. (I tried to pick pieces that felt solid)

After that, I'll leave them in the 240G for probably a month with some feeders to see how they do.

If the feeders stay alive, and I can still see them after a month (sometimes tannins really suck). I'll start my loach community.

Will do. I think it will work. I have a bunch of scrap wood and brush to burn so I was going to kill two birds w/ one stone.
