So, I'm setting back up a natives tank and it just can't cycle any fast. I'm itching bad so what better way to get the itch out (besides fishing) than to look at pictures lol. I came across this "red eye bass" and this thing is gnarely! I have never came across one of these in all of the states that I fished in. Has anyone ever seen one of these in person? It almost appears that a rock bass or goggle-eye has hybridized with a small mouth! I hate hybrids but this thing is awesoomme!!! I want one!

I've caught a few LMB with red eyes, but I've NEVER seen anything like that! That guy is awesome!

Ok, I did a little research and I found this on Wikipedia...

" The Redeye bass (Micropterus coosae) is a species of freshwater fish in the sunfish family (Centrarchidae) of order Perciformes. One of the black basses, it is native to only a few rivers in western South Carolina, southwestern North Carolina, northern middle and eastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, and portions of Georgia, Alabama, and streams in central Kentucky, and West Virginia, and is uncommon compared to the other species. The waters it is normally found in are cool streams and rivers in the foothills of mountains.
The upper jaw (maxilla) extends to the back of the eye, which is usually red. There are dark bars on the side, which fade to lighter color in the center.
Growing to a maximum reported overall length of 47 cm (19 in), the redeye bass is one of the smaller black basses. The probable world record for Redeye bass is 5 lb 2.5 oz (2.34 kg) from Lake Jocassee in South Carolina.[1] Many Redeye bass world record listings, especially those over 5 lb (2.3 kg) are actually records for the shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae) which was commonly called Redeye bass."

I still want one bad.

while I've considered rock bass for my tank I've never seriously considered an actual bass until now. still a bit big though.
that's a neat looking fish.

Damm they sell them in your lfs! How much do they run and where are located?

We have them all over here as well. I caught 10 or so yoy about 1 in and fed them to my crappie. Tried growin them out in a 10g for a short period but they never made it. They were very timid and I never witnessed them eating. Gills of the same size ate flakes in a couple days.

Not trying to hj just some rock candy.

They are notorius tail nippers on jigs with twister tails. I break off the tail to catch them when they overtake the spawning grounds in spring. Small tube jigs also work. I never tried a larger one in my native setup. Always read they are timid and hard to keep.

Very nice but that not a red eye bass.. What you caught there is a rock bass or others know them as gogo eyes or google eyes. We have those here too.
