hi all, i am just starting a new tank(juwel 450) i will be keeping the internal filter and adding a pro3 and a under gravel filter to the system, now then, what i was going to do was put one of the out going pipes to the pro3 onto the ugf,,but some one suggested puting the return pipe onto the ugf so no crud would settle on the bottom,is this a good idea, and will the ugf work as good going this way,,i want the maximum bio possible

You will be much better off just running a powerhead reverse flow on the UGF. The pro 3 is your primary method to surface agitation it appears, so putting the return into the UGF would do no good. I would also recommend adding an AC110 or two onto that system, with 2 foam bricks in each for mechanical filtration. This way the detritus will be forced up by the UGF, the ACs will pull particulates out of the water, and the 2080 will take care of the primary bulk of biological filtration.

sorry forgot to add there will be a 1200 lh power head for surface and one fluvul plus 4 (not familiar with reverse flow???)

All the larger AC powerheads have a reverse flow option.
oh did not know that, i have never used ugf before, i just use power heads for warter movment

so should i use the ugf in the conventional way or should i put the power head in reverse???

You can do this if you like (and I have) but the way I decide when to service a canister filter is the water flow and you will not be able to monitor this if you use your canister return for reverse flow undergravel.

There are pros and cons with what you are thinking so I cant tell you what is best since I dont know your priorities however, it certainly is possible.
