has anybody ever seen anything like this? (parasite problem)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I added some oak leaves to the tank today just to see if anything happens. I will try some peas for the heck of it but don't expect it to help. I also would like to point out I have starved this fish more than a week a couple of times and it doesn't help at all. I really am not an over feeder I only feed my fish 5 times a week (sometimes less.) I can tell by looking at their bellies and reactions if they really need to eat. Im going to check out those links rd thanks everybody for advice and input I am willing to try anything once starting with the more natural methods. Im not a big fan of pharmaceuticals.

Cam, is this fish an import from Asia?

Yes he came from ekk in thailaind on a group buy I did with Honda###. 4/5 lived but 4/5 of the other batch I got died from parasites the first week and they were less than 1". The one that lived is beautiful but my male kml munched her top fin down to the spine and it hasn't grown back. She will make a nice breeder but my divider failed me. My favorite kml died last week from Popeye/bacterial infection which is unfortunate but expected with Thai flowerhorns. Not happy but that's where weak genetics and being passed around in unclean places gets you.

It sucks but can't cry over spilled milk when I knew what I was getting myself into. Luckily I passed a lot of beautiful fish on locally and ordered extra for myself. Now its time to get some of those ones I've been cramping into small tanks with dividers and treating for parasites into the big tanks.

Like yourself I'm not a big fan of pharmaceuticals either. Having said that the first thing that I do with imports from Thailand, Vietnam, etc, is deworm them with an anthelminthic agent such as Levamisole, which is very safe & easy on a fish if used at the correct levels. That treatment takes care of any internal worms.

Then I use the 3% epsom infused food for 5 days to clean them out of any possible internal parasites, which is another very safe & very effective form of treatment. After that it's all up to the genetics of the fish. Clean water, good food, and cross your fingers. I've been lucky with the 2 Thai fish that I currently own, both appear to be very strong fish. My fader is locally bred, and again a strong healthy fish.

In the case of this FH of yours, due to its gradual swelling I'd bet on it being a tumor, in which case its chance of recovery is pretty much zero.
