What you are describing is a nightmare waiting to happen. When items such as this are shipped it will typically be FOB shipping point, and even if it isn't, good luck collecting a refund on damaged goods shipped from a company based in China.

I remember the retail website the company was on if you buy the tank from them on Abibaba http://www.alibaba.com/countrysearch/CN/fish-tank.html the main website if you register has a policy that pays for damaged goods.
I personally would rather glue a tank together but due to political pressure it has to come from a factory.

I have shipped a number of containers worth a good few million of industrial manufacturing equipment from China, and can honestly say we have only ever had excellent service. Where equipment needed repairs, the Chinese companies never refuted claims, sent spares promptly and paid for the local repair costs we incurred, I will add we have an excellent agent that facilitates our dealings with the equipment manufacturers.

I suspect that the dealings of a company purchasing millions of $$$ worth of goods, and the potential to be purchasing more, might be a wee bit different than a single individual, making a single purchase. I would feel the same no matter the country of origin, when importing items into Canada. I have also spent a good portion of my adult life importing and/or exporting goods to all points on the globe.

Put it this way, it tends to really come down to the company you are deaing with the type of service you get...
But if you do have any problems with the tank, then getting it fixed might cost an extra round of shipping potentially, or a lot of mis-understandings before its sorted out...

And as an individual living in the USA, what recourse will there be if the transaction with a company based in China goes sideways? I think that's the point that some of you are missing. The OP will be at the mercy of the company that he is dealing with, and with no prior business transactions to base anything on - including reviews from fellow hobbyists in the USA, that could be a rather risky move.
