Has anyone ever glued back together an acrylic tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just watched his 4 part video last night.
Doesn't look very difficult. But using the size acrylic I've got, may be a little harder to work with
I should go back on U Tube and search large tanks

Thanks to all u guys

I cut my teeth building my 6x4. Actually, I'm kinda surprised the tank your talking about is only 1" thick. Is there any crazing on the front or back panels? I used a jig saw and a sprayer to keep the acrylic cool while cutting. My cuts were for the lids, and had to be cleaned up as they were not straight (only 1/2" thick). If you are worried about the joints where you rebond the acrylic, you could always bond a strip of 1/2" behind the joint. Take your time and do it right if you are set on it. You must keep the cutting blade cool or it will be a nightmare. Pics.

This is the tank i need to cut. But I'm thinking of mayb just selling it and buying something i can fit in my basement

Cut with drill saw similar i.e Rotozip. Edge prep panels on CNC, scrape to finish, move to new site, re-assemble using #40 or #42.

There's a little more to it that this, but this is essentially how Ive done it. Remember after you cut it up your dealing with a smaller sized tank and very often the panels will be slightly warped. If you re-assemble with warped panels under stress your looking at future problems. If warped, consider taking them to a shop that can thermoform and have them flattened by heating on a flat surface.

Instead of cutting up the tank, why don't you pay a contractor to open up a bigger space in the store to move the tank?

Closing it up afterwards is no big deal either.

Way smarter to do this than to chop up the tank and try to splice it back together later...unless you are going for the ghetto look for your big new tank.

If so, then by all means...chop away!!

Now that's an idea!

It could be done if you cut out the six panels and then just treat them as raw stock and change the size of the tank, but cutting that 1" acrylic will be no easy task without proper equipment.

I can't believe anyone's even questioning Oddball...... IF I doubted him I'd immediately go check on my fish. That guy's probably forgot more then half of us will ever know.

1" is pushing it for 3' tall if I'm not mistaken...... I wouldn't want to try to re bond.

I'd hack it up and use the front and side panes for a giant front pane on a big ply tank. 900 is sweet. 1900 is sweeter...... Sawzall and some water then have it professionally refinished and it's ready for a big ol playwood in wall.

Too much bowing using 1" at 3ft. Better off hacking it up and going to 30" IMO. More than likely the material will exibit some warpage at because it was designed incorrectly.

There are many authorities and all should be questioned. ;)
