HAHA. This reminds me of when I first started fish keeping. I had a 30 gallon tank w/ a Penguin Bio wheel HOB w/ 2 baby oscars (hence, first time fish keeping). I'm not sure what it's called but I took off the part that is at the end of the filter that sucks in the water from the tank. i thought the filters flow would be a lot stronger if i did and i didnt think the oscars would get sucked into it. Boy was i wrong. A few days later I woke up to my tanks filter making loud noises and i rushed to the tank. At first i thought my filter was broken but when i checked closely one of my oscars were gone and sucked up into the filter. This was probably my first lesson learned.
I had some neons that got sucked up wayyy back. None of my fish are small enough for that now, and if they were, I would put up a screen or something.

haha hard candy you ripped off the bottom of the intake, you realize it is there now to stop larger objects, such as oscars, from entering it?

nemo ....

my wet/dry sump ate a senegal bichir once. He jumped into the corner overflow and took a swim down the tube into the sump.....too bad there was a sponge at the end of the tube.

About 20 yrs ago I had a Diatom filter it did such a great job cleaning my tanks. One day I walked in and found a fish (don't remember what)sucked into intake. Poor fish was about 5 inches tall sucked into 2 inch hose. It's nose was about 4 inches long now. I went out and bought the screen that day.

Yeah it was my first lesson learned. The oscars were small. probably an 1" max. I didn't think it would get sucked in but cichlids do get curious of their surroundings and I'm pretty sure it just wanted to take a peek not knowing it's life would be at stake if it did.

I've lost feeder fish that way... which was bad, because I thought my crayfish ate them and then came time to clean out the filter... yuck!

I get baby electric yellows in my in my fx5 a lot of times. Luckly its modded and the fish actually live and grow in the filter. I usually won't see them for months untill I take the filter apart.

I had a few random fish sucked into a Hot Magnum. After selling what fish were in the tank, I shut it down. A couple month later decided I needed to take the filter apart and store it. All I can say is WHEW!

Not sucked in but one of the small crabs in my 33 gal found its way into the HOB and now lives there. I just leave it in there. The reason for that is I had a whole bunch of crabs in the tank until i got my JD's and GT... They ate the rest of the crabs.. So I say if the crab was smart enough to find a way not to get eaten then hell I will leave it there.

what a coincidence I have had zebras sucked up too. When i was cleaning my tank and giving my gravel a major clean I took off the strainer, thinking it would filter more. I forgot about it for about an hour GAHHH! The zebra danios seemed to be attracted to it, maybe they liked the current? I looked in my filter and saw little bits of danio :[ Lesson learned though. always keep the strainer on :]
