Has anyone ever owned a Black Nasty?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Black Nasties are fairly easy to obtain...there's a guy that I got mine from on Aquabid that almost always has a groups of babies for sale. They get bloat very easily when small and should only be fed flakes until they get bigger. I bought a group of 10 a couple of months ago and now I only have 3 left. I saw a fully grown male at the ACA Convention....very impressive.

This was my friend's Odo died recently though..

'Black Nastys' aren't always easy to obtain..

I got mine about 5 years ago, and jumped at them when I saw it, though I was less than ready when I got 'em. Had to crowd them into a 33 gallon tank, and eventually I lost them all. Kept them for about 2 months. I have yet to see them again, and I RELIGIOUSLY travel the fish shops in town looking around for hard to find centrals weekly (sometimes bi-weekly).

I would put the Black Nasty on the temperment scale (though at around 3" in length) in between a Red Devil and a Nandopsis (Parapetenia, Hericthys, whichever they have put it in now) bartoni, with the Bartoni being MUCH more aggressive than the Red Devil.

One of the most aggressive cichlids I have kept, though keep in mind that I had it for only 2 months in a 33 gallon tank, at a 3" size.

The only 'expertise' I can recommend: They need bigger grow-out tanks than a 33 gallon :(

If you are looking for Black Nastys let me know I just got 6 for $28 shipped. PM me.

Jeff does have the best. I own both species and they are in separate tanks due to size difference. both are awesome.
