balton, how can u just tell the sex of a fish by lookin at the picture ?

I don't think this is a 100% accurate way of knowing but I've always been told the males have spots on their gill plate area. Females have blotches (I even heard one guy say females have "beards"). If I'm wrong on that, someone please chime in and let me know so I don't have wrong information.

I also think your Striped Midas has the potential to look as good as SK's. With a light colored substrate and the right lighting he could be a real headturner. Your substrate doesn't compliment any of your fish btw and lighting makes all the difference in the world.

hey sinister kisses, thats not a banded devil. its a striped cintrenellum ! unless their the same thing in which case i didnt know that....but my banded devil still pwns !

Lol okay first things first...people, read the post, it is not MY fish, its cichlidscene's "Bighead". Secondly, yours isn't a devil, its a barred midas. Nothing about the body shape of yours says devil, and everything about it says midas. But he really is gorgeous.

Nice cichlids! Looking good!

sorry, i knew he wasnt yours. I went to the scene to check it out. Although I did not know he was a barred midas, i got him out of a tank with a bunch of other "banded devils" for 7 bucks. He has the most pronounced body shape and a small hump at a young age.

"devils" and "midas" are the same or incorrectly labelled for people who could care less or don't know any better.
Your midas looks like a midas, not the more laterally compressed and slightly larger-lipped A. labiatus.
It goes the other way too. There are plenty of people on here who have "Midas" that look more like devils.
Of course, not that looks make that much of a difference in the end anyway. Most of them are hybrids.

As for best looking barred, it's all about Dumbo.

l3gend504,

Your small barred midas has alot potential due to its large flowing fins and large head for its size. Just keep us updated.
