Nascar uses tear off films on their windshields. Could something like this be adapted to acrylic aquariums to help prevent scratches? Scratches are the only real downside to acrylic aquariums.

This is text from here...

"The windshields on NASCAR race cars are made of Lexan, which is the same polycarbonate material used on fighter-plane canopies. This material is very strong, but also surprisingly soft. This softness is actually what gives it its strength. When an object hits the Lexan windshield, it doesn't shatter it. Instead, the object scratches, dents or imbeds itself in the windshield.

The windshields are usually constructed from three relatively flat pieces of Lexan. Each piece is supported by a framework built into the roll cage -- this gives the windshield the strength to resist large objects. The downside of a Lexan windshield is that it scratches very easily -- you could scratch one with your fingernail. A bare Lexan windshield would have to be replaced after every race because of scratches from sand and other grit on the track. But instead of replacing them, the NASCAR teams apply an adhesive film to the windshields that is harder than the Lexan and as clear as glass. After each race, the film can be peeled off and replaced, leaving the Lexan unscratched. Some teams apply several layers of this film and remove them one at a time during the race."

So, am I a genius?:D

I love NASCAR and i'd take some aquarium tear off's... Sounds good to me..

sounds good, my only concern is that it could end up looking like most of the DIY tint kits in those old civics.... lol

oh and do they make a version for the inside of the tank :D

That's what I'd like to know. Could it be applicable for inside an aquarium? If so, it could eliminate the one drawback of acrylic tanks. Somebody with more brains than me needs to try this.:D

And when it starts looking like that '89 civic's windows, you just tear off a layer. Let's say it took a couple of months to start looking unacceptable. Six layers of the tear offs would give you a year without scratches.

acrylic eventually fogs over time, so it's not the only draw back.

Would it still fog over with the tear offs? I wonder how often the NASCAR teams have to replace their windshields due to fogging over? Any hardcore NASCAR fans know the answer?

just go over it with a blowtorch and that will fix it :D

I've never heard or read anywhere about the changing of a windsheild on a nascar because of fogging over. I'm an avid nascar fan (yes, my kids are too) and I've never seen/read it. I think the tear offs would work on the outside, but I'd be worried about the adhesive on the inside of the tank. Hmmmmmm, good idea though. I don't own an acrylic so I can't try it......

I'm positive it would work well on the outside of the tank. It's the inside I don't know about as I don't know what kind of adhesive is used. Maybe it's static cling type? I just don't know. The town I live in, Concord, NC, is pretty much the NASCAR capitol of the world. All the teams have their shops here. I'll try and find out.
