I am looking onto it several years after I graduate. Has anyone ever done this? Recommend this? Costs, etc?

Thanks...

I met my wife in Ecuador! She's an Oregonian, too - We were actually on a study-abroad program from the same university but had never met prior to going to Ecuador. We were studying in Quito for the majority of the time but we did do some traveling.

Papallacta is a hot-springs complex about an hour out of Quito, it is a nice day-trip. Baños is another place to soak in thermal pools, but the pools aren't nearly as nice. The rain forest is a must-see, there are a lot of different areas you can check into.

For something really different, try Vilcabamba, home of the fabled Fountain of Youth! If you're going there from Quito I would highly recommend flying to Loja, the bus-ride is a killer.

Ecuador is a great place, I'd definitely recommend going!

AWESOME, thanks for the info!!! Do you have any idea on the prices, for about a 2 week trip?

I am really attracted to the fact that the dollar is the same as here.

When I was there (1996) the Sucre was devaluating so fast I made daily trips to change money. I' can't say what it's like since they started using the USD, but I'm sure it's cheap. When we were there we would spend about $20.00 a night going out (beer can be expensive anywhere), meals were about $3.00-$4.00 (and up). Rooms varied from $2.00 (no kidding) to $30.00 a night.

I'm interested in this as well. I'm going to an informational meeting tomorrow about a class my school is offering this year that includes a trip to Ecuador-and even better, the Galapagos Islands. I've wanted to go there since I was a little kid, so I'm pretty excited if it all works out

I thought of another cool thing - The Andes!

Sorry for the poor quality, but these are pictures of prints. One is at about 16,000' on Cotopaxi, the other is at about 10,000' in Quito.

Wow....Amazing. Thanks Dan!

Nice pics. I just went to the info session a couple hours ago. Basically, if I can get student loans to cover the trip (since it is technically for school), I'm going. Otherwise, I can't come close to affording it atm. The trip would be a week in Quito and surrounding areas (including cloud forests and maybe Cotopaxi), an 8 day cruise through the Galapagos Islands, and possibly for an extra fee (that I'm definitely going to pay if I can get a loan for it) a week in the Amazon (I mean if I'm spending $1000 to fly to SA with no plans of going back any time soon, it's worth it). If I can get the money together, I have little doubt this would be the best 3 weeks of my life so far.
