HAS ANYONE ON HERE EVER KEPT SHAD?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you are talking about fresh water Shad, they are very difficult. There can be no square corners in the tank at all. They will all huddle together in one spot, and suffocate on their own slime. They are very dirty fish, and very sensitive to water changes. When I used to fish a lot for Stripped Bass, we could only keep about a dozen in a round 50gal tank, with continuous fresh water being pumped through. Even then the maximum time we could keep them alive was 4-5 hours.

all the ones ive tried died before i got home like he said there very sensitive ive here they start to die once you take them out of the water no matter how long there out for i dont know that thats true but those night made for good catfishin

I've kept threadfin shad, if you catch them very small they are easy to raise in a large tank. I had a school of about 12 I kept for over a year. I feed them tiny pellets, (Hikari micro pellets) with a feeding ring to keep the pellets on one area. I used trickle filtration and a 18" bubble wand for aeration.

lol shad y would u want to keep them. ther a staple baitfish for all like catfish, bluegill, bass, an stuff like that. good luck on raisin feeders.

The shad I had were very pretty fish, they schooled together closely and I never noticed a smell. Then again I did use a trickle filter like a marine tank so possible that made a difference.

i had 2, 1 inchers in a divided 10 gal and feed them flake foods untill on day they slipped through the divider and the bass killed them.

Wow, you keep senegal bichirs and jewel cichlids, I never see anyone with those. You must be pretty cool....

Responsible keepers keep fish because they like them, not because other people say they're cool....
