Has anyone seen my Shovelnose?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
are you sure your salinity is 1.010? cause thats a lot of salt for a shovelnose catfish and most live plants

To be honest it isn't always that high. Being as brackish waters naturally have fluctuating salinity/specific gravity, i am quite ok with having a plus/minus of about 6PPT/.005SG. Some will say that the change will stress the fish and cause slower growth, susceptibility to disease etc, but aren't we all trying to replicate their natural environment, which is anything but absolutely and indefinitely stable? My temperature fluctuates as well, from day and night around 2 Degrees Fahrenheit. But people say what you will, my plants a growin, my fish a thrivin, and my food bill a soarin lol :)

It's not the fish that don't deal with salinity fluctuations, it's that changing it more than .002 wipes out all the beneficial bacteria

That might be true, and i have no way of measuring it to disprove that point, but for as heavily as my tank is overstocked, my ammonia and nitrite stay either at 0ppm or very close to it.(depends on how many feeders i dump in at once. Usually 100-200.) they will sometimes cause a small spike...

Oh and BTW, I will post some new pictures of my moray at his new size in the current tank. I just upgraded my lighting from a cheap Pet*mart brand with dual t-8's to a new GLO T5 Dual 48" with Power Glo and Life Glo Bulbs. Dimmer spectrum with more light output, higher wattage, more efficient etc. and much better for the plants. Any experience with those? I know i know this should be in equipment and setup but...

I agree about brackish water. Its not an exact science and its levels bounce constantly. I have friends who keep very similar tanks to yours and they are thriving as well. Sounds like your doing it right. :)

Haha what a naughty fish how long was he in hiding for? I had a betta hide so well I thought for sure it was gone . Fish can be sneaky glade to hear you found him.

He was hiding for a couple of days, long enuff that i was hours away from running down to my LFS to find a new replacement, but as i was getting ready to leave, BAM! right in the front of the tank just chillin there! :WHOA:
