Dude I have a ;ab produced SA red tail cat/Tiger shovelnose hybrid... if that can be done I definetely think the jardini and formosus could be produced!

If the hybrid could breed then a Florida Fish farm could produce pond raised young for the aquarium market and neither species would be endangered. You would have to find out how to deal with Cites and the Fish and Wildlife Service. They may still hold a trump card to any effort to produce these fish.

supposedly it's been done. Search here on MFK, it was discussed not too aweful long ago. Also, the hybrid would NOT be legal in the US. The ESA states that hybrids and even some "look alikes" of a species listed on the ESA are covered by the law. Sorry to rain on your parade.

If it's any consolation, the pics I saw of the result were more jar than asian.

they sure got some crappy laws in the usa. Sure it endanger but they are not helping us help populate the fish or care for them either.

Would be neat to hybrid it. I think it would work but could take alot of time and a few trail and error.

Yeah, as long as one parent is an endangered or illegal, the offspring will be given the same the same protection or prohibited status....sucks...

ive seen a breeder in queensland breed a jar with an rtg asian. the younger fish had the looks of a jar but with a red tail. but once the fish grew bigger the red went away and it became a normal looking jardini. this was a long time ago and the cross bred had the normal 7 scale of a jar not 5 like the asians.

this is the only breeder ive only ever heard of that has done this.
but i dont see the reason y to do it.

Thanks, just thinking of a way to get an Asian like aro for tanks where they are illegal. Maybe the offspring of this hybrid would show the recessive trait and look more like Asians but heck if they are still illegal then there may not be a point. Next idea! Someone has to work on line hybridizing jars. There has to be some colorful ones out there. Look at what the Chinese did for carp. Even Pimas show bright red color so some jars may have it. How did we get gold jars as on Aquabid? Some mutation? My jar has some red; why can't one have more? Come on Aussies, get to work at line breeding these. It's your backyard for selective breeding.

I know, you guys don't care to do this because you can get Asians but think of us poor Americans, scheming and dreaming of a colorful aro.
