A heap of Blood Parrots would look good, with Plecos or loaches.
Or just the large SA/CA Comm like mine.

hmmm, geos are interesting. I have never kept them. Although idk if my wife will let me get something "small." She said if I got this tank there better be a monster in it lol (monster = greater than 12 inches)

Well, if you need something bigger than 12", that can be kept in a group, I would go back to a Malawi predator tank. Some of those haps can get huge. I know you said no Africans, but it is the only thing I can think of that fits the bill.

get a pair of loiselli or any of the parachromis sp. OR get a pair of Festae

I love pacus and other large fish, so if your up to it you could rescue some large South American cihclids. Something like a pacu or oscars, or a silver aro.

The OP specified no grow outs (fish that will eventually outgrow this tank). A 180 is a little small for a silver aro and WAY too small for any pacu longterm.
