EBJDs that are stressed out will turn black.. and it takes time for the to adjust.. Mine went from extremely blue azul to very dark blue in my 55 gallon.. then i did the unrecommended... I put it in a 5 gallon tank by himself.. and now he's a Baby blue color.. (he's at 2.5")

My blues all did fine in my 55...I had 7 of them, the only real color change was when the water got a bit dirty...you should be ok though...

In my experience CA Cichlids get pale when they are stressed and darken when they are confident/happy... My experience with Blue Dempseys has been the same...

I've grown several groups out together and the dominant Blue Dempseys were darker than the subdominant ones... I've had several Blue Dempseys spawn and especially when younger then darkened up considerably when spawning (my females have turned Jet black when spawning).

Can you share a bit more detail Andrew? 7 Blues were fine in your 55 gal for how long? Until what size? What genders were they?... often details make all the difference ;)
