I’m originally from the dmv area, relocated to Jacksonville Fl about 10 years ago. Before I left the area a lot of the smaller mom and pop shops were closing down. Tough business to keep afloat I’m guessing. But I remember a store in Annandale called super petz, I think it was on little river turnpike. I use to drive to Randallstown (close to Baltimore) to the aquarium center from time to time. That was my favorite shop back then. There was a small shop that had a surprisingly good selection up in silver spring off of the white oak exit right where 495 and 95 north splits. Can’t remember the name though. Always had great variety. Only other shop was marine scene waaaay down in Richmond. Really nice if your into saltwater. Again, 10 years ago so I’m not sure of what if anything is still around.

Richmond has some good little shops. I'm not too sure about nova these days. Centreville aquarium used to be a popular spot.
Yes, a lot of independent LFSs have closed down throughout DC metro area. I used to visit half a dozen of them on biz trips to DC but no more now except House of Tropical. The one you mentioned in Randallstown MD, Aquarium Center, the largest fish store at the time, has been closed for 20+ years. House of Tropical in Baltimore is still around though, presently the largest and oldest store in the region .
