I bought a laptop from Sharp some time ago, the price was spectacular for what I was getting. I know that Sharp is not exactly into the computer world and are involved with other electronics but what the hell, it’s a big company and the price was great so I ordered the thing.

I got it and I was all happy with it, everything seemed great.

I went to update my Windows XP to SP2, and right after the update and the computer rebooting the whole system just crash’s. The second computer starts this blue screen with an error appears and it reboots automatically and loops like that. I did a quick Google on the motherboard and the BIOS (geek talk!), turns out SP2 is incompatible with that version of BIOS and there is an update out. I called Sharp tech support and asked them about it, and they basically tell me there isnt, and that SP2 will not work, and that its not their problem and I have to take that up directly with Microsoft.

Fine, I then took restore CDs and trying to reinstall Windows. The CDs fail! CDrom over heats and basically shutsoff. I call the tech support again and explain my problem, they said to send it in... I do. A month later I get back a computer with fresh Windows install, yet I am having the same problems.

I do minor security updates and avoid SP2, after one of the updates computer ****s up again. I put in the restore CDs, same problem. I call tech support and send it again. Three weeks later I get a bill
Labor - $120
Hard Drive (60GB) - $406.48
+ Shipping and Taxs everything ends up being $590.20
I am just flipping out, if you go to a computer store and look for a 60GB hard drive $100 is MAX price for them, they are ****ing outdated for crying out loud.. and at a $100 you are getting ripped off.

I call tech support and ask them how the hell did they come up with these prices, guy has no idea and tells me to talk to the head of the repair department. I then ask him what the hell happened to the warranty, he tells me that the warranty only covers faulty hardware in the system.. I tell him "well wouldn’t a hard drive or cdrom be faulty hardware in the system?".. little **** tells me yeah and tells me to take it with the head of the department again and gave me his direct number.

I am about to call this guy and get this **** straight. I am just so ****ing pissed off right now over how ****ing stupid these people are.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM SHARP!

Give them hell, politely, and tell them that your are recording all communications in view of possible litigation, if you can't get this corrected at that level follow the food chain right up the ladder.

WTF, that's crazy! Sue the basterds!! I'm pretty shure you will be proven in your right, it fall unther garanty right?

Go as high as you can, thats the only way anything will get done...with service like that its no wonder they dont sell many computers. Also...I had to deal with a rebooting problem like that, it ended up being corrupt video drivers. If you havent looked into that it may be worth a try. Good luck man.

I just called the guy in charge of the repair department and got a message, will call back in about 15 minutes and if he is not picking up Ill just leave my name and phone number. I expect him to call back by the end of today..

If not I am so annoyed by these idiots at this point, I am seriously just going to go file a lawsuit against them. I do not need this bs...

It is clearly a production error therefore I don't think they would stand a chance if you file them a lawsuit.

I finally got a hold of the guy in charge and he did not answer the questions about the $406 hard drive. But he did tell me that in my file it is stated that I only have a 1 year warranty when I have 3 year warranty. He has asked me to fax over the paperwork that states I have the 3 year warranty and he will review it. I did that, I also typed up a little letter and faxed it with the paper:
James,

I have contacted you earlier today (September 22nd, 2005) in regards to my laptop that is currently in repair. I am including my original Sharp bill that clearly states that I have a 3 year warranty but besides that I have a couple more questions.

The problem that I was having with my laptop had to do with the cdrom, as it did not function well in the past as well (it would refuse to read certain CDs yet work with others no problem – all CDs have been tested on more then one machine).

There is another problem that I am having with my laptop, Microsoft Windows XP SP2 update does not seem to work with this laptop. Every time I try to update it, note that it’s a clean install without any extra software being installed, the computer crashes after the update. Can you please take a look at that as well as the updates address vital security issues.

Why was the hard drive replaced and not the CDROM?
Was the issue with the CDROM addressed at all?
How did you guys manage to find a 60GB hard drive for $406.48? (Note that you can go just about to any store and find a 60GB hard drive for $110 dollars MAX, and that is overpaying as it is)
Does the warranty cover all of this?

Thank you,
Lets see what he will respond with.

Interesting story about the whole Mac deal: I clearly wanted to buy a new system and originally I bought a PowerBook. It worked great but a week later the whole system just started malfunctioning and display ended up dieing. I took it into the shop and the people who took a look at it told me that the system was faulty and that it was completely their fault. Everyone was apologizing and gave me my money back right away. Week later I even got a letter of apology that was supposedly signed by Steve Jobs. I know it was fake but the fact that they took it back no problem, were willing to replace it on the spot, and actually even bothered to send me a letter really goes to show what a great customer care they got.

Around that time that Sharp deal came along and I went with that and got ****ed over. Too bad I can not get my money back and go give PowerBook a shot again.

This is too much for me, why cant I just get something and for the damn thing to work just like with the rest of my machines. :(

I use Hewlett-Packard and it works great.

are you sure the 3 year warrenty is from sharp cause when i got my laptop toshiba gave me a 1 year warrenty and i signed up for another 3 years but it was going through a different company. also laptop hard drives cost more than regular hard drives $406 is still really high a 60GB laptop hard drive should only be around 200-300.

The warranty was bought directly from Sharp and not 3rd party store or anything. Its their problem to figure it out.

I know there is a difference in laptop and workstation harddrives. $200-300? You are getting ripped off. Check out NewEgg.com - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...tyCodeValue=0&Submit=Property&SubCategory=380 as an example. The most EXPENSIVE 60GB laptop harddrive they got is $110.
