I've had to do it because I didn't want to see them suffering anymore. I put them in a large ziplock back with tank water and a bunch of ice cubes and put the in the freezer. I've tried just tank water and it was really sad watching them try to move in the bag so adding ice kind of makes them go to sleep really quickly.

My cichlids screwed a Silver Dollar up. It was swimming upside down, panting and messed pretty bad.

I took it outside, set it on the concrete and chopped it into 3 pieces with a piece of shale. Messy, but i think it's probably the most pain-free method if you don't have clove oil.

Ive tried this and sometimes I get the feeling its barely hanging on. I usually go with decap as a result of having a fish live when slapped hard on the counter.
