Hey Group--

After being in this hobby for about 6 years, I can tell when a fish isn't going to make it.

In all those years, I've had one miracle recovery-- but I know one of my fish is old and looks to be suffering.

99% of the time I let them die. The other fish seem to know when a fish is dying and leave them alone.

Do you ever put them out of their misery? If so, how?

Thanks for being sensitive and not suggesting there is more I can do to help save the fish. Trust me on that.

Is this a guppy? 6 years is still young for most fish...or you collect older fish?!

But, yes, I've euthanized a few fish that got sick, etc. I use clove oil. Just a few drops and they go to sleep, then after about ten minutes I add even more until their breathing just stops. So they basically die in their sleep.

Usually I let them be - and then let the other fish eat the body, just as in nature. If he is basically on his side, gasping hard, I will give him to one of my big cats, but that's it.
If it's a big fish like an Oscar or something, I just spend time with it, just like if it was a dog or something.
That said - I only have "pet fish" now - not lots of mixed tanks, which would apply to what I did before.

Is it Copadichromis borleyi? How long they usually live? Maybe she is just checking out. I wouldn't euthanize for old age until secondary trouble...

As said, clove oil.

There are other, quick, methods, such as a cut quickly and strongly done behind the head, but not for everybody.

Also, and also not for everybody, throwing it strongly to the floor having it in your palm and then flapping the palm quickly and strongly down.

Clove oil sounds familiar--like I've heard that before.

BTW--to clarify, I've been in the hobby 6 years. The fish is not 6. The fish is old, but not dying from old age.

I also thought about chopping the head off--of course any of this is because it seems to be suffering.

Thanks all. I appreciate it.

Net it, carry outside & apply BB gun shot to head. it's fast.
( if there's no clove oil @home )
:-/

It's not for the weak. But a good solid wack to the head with a hard heavy object usually works instantly.
