Have you ever seen a SMB colored like this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He is 13". I think he is really cool too.

I am treating him with salt right now to cure some disease that he had when I caught him last week. He has a white spot above his right eye that you can see in that picture. Also, it extends over his eye a little bit. The tips of his fins are a little white and his left pectoral fin has rot. In my area, we are having major problem with bacteria killing off our smallmouth bass population.

Hope it makes it, it woud be a shame to loose a nice keeper that looks like that. Do you know what your area is gonna do?

I did attend a conference on this problem, but it was basically to get the feedback from the fisherman.

I don't think there is much they can do as it is all related to low water and high water temperature. They have a whole section devoted to this problem.

awww, the poor thing is sick :(

I know. I am just glad it wasn't me because he was like that when I put him in there less than a week ago. Hopefully my environment will be better than the river temperature/water quality. They had an article in the newspaper that the temperature was in the 80s in the river and it was killing everything in there... not just the bass. We had a drought here for about two months along with 100 degree weather for awhile.

I am treating him with salt right now. I have Melafix too if he doesn't recover.

Here is the article if you are curious:

Me too. They are doing their best, but it is too big of a problem. Really the only things that I could come up with is that they could add water to the river or maybe limestone, but obviously neither or these two things are possible on this scale.

Another problem with have is acid mine drainage over a certain portion of the river. Pollution is a definite factor, but the main problem is the low and hot water.

They (Fish and Boat Commission) told me that in years where we have lots of water, the disease isn't as bad, but the spawning of the bass is less successful due to the high water. When the water is low the spawning success rate is up, but the disease thrives in the hot and low water. So we just can't win.

odd coloring there in the first one almost looks like a shadow, wonder if its an injury or a genetic abnormality

Weather always plays a factor on fish and at this point its not helping, on a funny point you could say that your SMB has a split personnality,LOL.
