I bought an Oxydoras catfish a little over a week ago. I still haven’t noticed if he’s eating or not. I know that they are night dwellers. Just not sure if I should be concerned or not. He’s about 7” or so. Any suggestions?

Probably still adjusting to it's new environment. What food have you been offering?

I’ve been trying algae wafer and Hakari carnivore pellets at night so far. Noticed that nothing has been eaten after a couple of hours. Trying not to let food just sit in the tank all night. So I do remove after a couple of hours.

Are the lights off when you feed it?

Ok great I would skip a day and see what happens.

O. niger often come badly starved or emaciated from vendors. A photo would tell us. If yours is not in a bad shape, taking a week or two to start feeding can be normal. It sounds you are doing it right, especially if the water nitrification is proper, there is no bullying, the water chemistry is fitting for the fish, stable, etc. the usual basics are covered.

It could be as ominous as your water is not good or could be as simple as your water composition (pH, hardness, temp, etc.) is very different from the prior water the fish had come from, so it will take some time for the fish to adapt, destress, and then develop an appetite.

I have a photo attached. I’ve been testing the water frequently. Everything is what it should be quality wise. Temperature at 78 degrees. He is in a 125 gallon tank with 1 - Azul peacock who is eating like a beast!

Firstly, your oxydoras is not. It’s a pterodoras,
probably granulosus, unless someone calls foul on my choice.
As for feeding, he looks really healthy, and good luck seeing him eat. Mine won’t eat unless it’s pitch black in the middle of the night, so I would leave a nice selection of food overnight and remove any leftovers in the morning. That way you will know what he prefers, if there is anything left.

Thanks for the advice. Upon doing more research. It’s definitely not an Oxydoras. What all did you offer yours?
