having trouble with mechanicle filtration...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the more you have the better it will be.

my mate has 4x ehime pro 3`s and 2 large internal filters on his 7ft.

sump and externals are mainly used for bio filtration.
internals are mainly used for water polishing on our tanks anyway.

we have internals and externals as well as sumps because should the sump pump fail you have no filtration on your tank. hence i have 2 pumps running so if one fails i have the other to keep it ticking over.

honestly with rays the more filtration the better, plus a decent amout of water movement to push the bits to the filters is needed.

did you buy the tank new? if so did the guy who built it know what it was going to be running in pump size? if so i think he wants a b*ll*cking.

my mate had a tank built by boss and they mde the over flows far to big, they take over the tank far to much.

your 3000lph return pump depending on which pump it is could be loosing alot of flowrate by the time it get to the hight of the tank. it might be as low as 2000lph if its a cheaper make of pump. i have a chinese made 2500lph pump that wont even get as high as the tank edge.

yeah the guy knew exactly what was going in it, but to be honest it was a f..k up since the day i ordered it,wrong colour background, wrong height cabinet, (had to take door frames and p/board down in house to get it in) scratches on glass, ordered the optiwhite but it isnt, chipboard in hood going damp already! but lesson learnt i paid in full before recieving it, so not much i could do...anyway managed to fix most of it now, thinking about adding an external to sort water quality out but havent really got loads of space (cant get to rear of cabinet because of sump at front) and it has bracing everywhere except weir in tank so maybe a few internals are they good at mechanical? and that way i dont have to drill hood and muck around too much only other thing is will the rays knock em off when there bigger?

The tank is 1200 liters and you're only using a 3000 lph pump. And because of the head height, the output is significantly less, you probably don't have much more than 2x per hour turnover.

Get a bigger pump.

Also what kind of mechanical media are you using in the sump?

i cant get a bigger pump as it pushes the water level too high in the tank because the weir glass was deigned too high! mech is sponges floss usual stuff

What is weir glass? Are you saying the intake into the corner overflow chamber can't keep up with a larger volume of flow?

because the piece of glass that makes the corner overflow has been set too high, the water level in tank when running with the bigger pump is too high so you can see bracing and the water nearly covers it..if you see what i mean, hard to explain...

can you post a pic?

i would remove the fish and get something like a kids pool to keep them in if you dont have a spare tank.

then i would remove the weir by cutting the silicone and get 1" cut of the hight, then resilicone it back on.

you will only have endless problems if you dont get it sorted and you might as well do a proper job of it now.

who built the tank? so everyone knows to stay away from the guy.

Power head with filter attachment with white water polishing pads . Aquaclear do a great one 1500lph and filter takes seconds ! Change it once a week and water clears beautifully

Agreed. I have 1 in my 125. Works wonders. In my area filter pads are 3.00 for 2. i change it about every 2 weeks.
