You can delete this if you feel it is a derail since the thread is for recent ray deaths. But maybe this could be helpful for others.

Its all good, recent or not, if its a mysterious death hopefully some commonailty can be found.

:)

Anybody see any treads thus far???

MINE DID NOT DIE :) to the date only lost one ray and it was due to flights being missed.,

i am thinking it is water quality issue with the stress of being freshly caught rays that trigger the problems.

IMO - I dont think it was a water quality issue. Compared to others I now feel guilty about my water change schedule. :D Seems high enough to me. I do agree on your stress issue thou, yet its so hard to measure stress levels with rays!

1) Minimum 4 times a week. Average 5.
2) 20-30% during week, half on weekend
twice a week
50%
2x a week
50%
Every second, third day, depends on how large is the tank/pond, and how stocked the enclosure is.Anywhere from 40-80%

I vote stress induced.... Tank mates/ water quality.

Had it happen before and almost pulled my hair out. Happening again, to me- in my opinion, just reinforces that theory....

I think rays can be VERY aggressive at times. Whether it be at feeding times, or giving the FNG a hard time.

I think the rays get upset about thier crappy conditions.... Realize it's just gonna get worse with another ray added.... So they are all the more uninviting to the newcomer. New ray gets there, is harassed by the other rays about contributing to the allready crappy conditions, New ray is just like "WTF I don't wanna be here" quits eating and begins it's decent.......

We all "QT" rays. We see them eat for a few weeks, color it good to go, and huck them in with the others ovbelooking the fact they may not be accepted if the water quality AND/OR space is NOT up to par.

Bottom line... IF your rays are on the fence about being happy another ray added is gonna be the dealbreaker.

Gr8....... Send the cookie back....LOL

I may be wrong but after seeing this happen again I don't know if I can justify overlooking it. So I thought I might as well huck it out there to be judged by the masses.

But how would one know they are on the fence? :nilly: By measuring water parameters?

You can have the cookie back but Im keeping the pizza! :D

Fluctuating pH levels between water changes ...an indication of insufficient filtration?
Slow, lethargic rays ...besides being under stress from parasites, it can also show early signs of bad environment.
Refusal of foods is another indicator.

How do you know they are on the fence? You don't. Assume they are and do another WC. Water parameters? What are those? Do another WC.

This sound familiar?

Rays aren't stupid, if they can let you know they are hungry they can let you know that the water sucks too.... OR you can just do as I do and assume the water always sucks. WC.... I see poo! WC. Bastids! Fresh poo. WC again. Does it suck? Yup. Does it suck more to have rays on the fence? YUP. IS there nothing with a bigger suck factor then watching them die? No. Except when your truck gets stolen.... But details on that would be a derail......
