He’s back.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks all, very sore still. Plenty of antibiotics and pain killers and I’m sure I’ll be fine.

Practical fish keeping have contacted me through social media for an interview to explain how dangerous these big fish can be.
I’m contacting the hospital for the xrays to show.

Apologies of I’m making no sense. I’m out of it on coodean tablets.
How did they even find out?

Mama mia! Yikes and ouch! Looking at your photos of the firewood, its spines are long, sharp as lancers, and in great shape. Still as you said, you got into a bad accident but at the same time you got lucky, praise the Lord! Wish you a speedy and complete recovery. Thank you for sharing this with us. It's in a way a wake up call to me and all other keepers of large spiny catfish. Wow, I am still shocked with this turn of events... My sympathies, Josh!

wednesday13 wednesday13 Russ, if you still keep your firewood, you gotta see this. Too bad BigRich is not on MFK anymore, I'll text Josh of Ohio Fish Rescue to see this.

Ive moves alot of big cats over the years and caught them up to almost 250lb in the Amazon. This was the result of cutting a corner and doing it in the dark. A stupid mistake my end. Let’s hope this information will help others to not make the same mistake. A case of being over confident and not paying full attention.

I’m out of hospital now, just have to watch for infection.

Wow, in the dark? A 44" firewood? You might have been taking life in your hands, Josh. I hear you.

Far not all catfish are armed with perfect lancers as your firewood was. I usually check out the spines on any catfish I will have to handle to decide the safest approach as I often get in close proximity and even contact. Often with age the spines on catfish like RTC, jau, and large Doradids, maybe Pangasids too, get dull. Often they have been broken and healed funny and not sharp anymore. Every case can be different. But catfish like TSN and firewood seem to have theirs usually quite sharp, the most dangerous. Large channel cats have theirs sharp too but often damaged.

I say in the dark (back of the van, just a small light)

Just a case of not being fully aware/ on the ball , I’ve moved him a few times.

I usually use a sling to move them. But, for the first time ever, his pectoral got stuck in the sling upon collecting him from Dazs. The plan was to use the towel like a sling, I do recall reading, towels where safest for these spiney catfish,
Upon lifting him out in the towel I didn’t notice the the pectoral fin had stabbed through straight away. The fishes mouth was just poking over the end the the towel, I lent over to make sure he was in properly. That’s when it got me.

It’s defiantly taught me to me do a lot more double checking before lifting. Think I’ll have ptsd the next time I move one ?

Holy hell mate, glad she missed ur artery...wish u a speedy recovery my friend! Shame when big fish stories end like this, when it comes to your life vs fish... its just a fish....people aren’t replaceable lol... chin up, keep pushin forward! ???
