I think we probably use a lot more media than we need, but matrix isn't that expensive so why not? I wonder how big of a bioload one FX5 full of matrix could handle. I've only got 4 liters in my 225, was initially gonna buy more but the tank never has any ammonia or nitrite, so...

I have a 350 with a 60 gallon sump with bioballs running in conjunction with an fx-5 filled with matrix. I also have a couple of bags of matrix in the sump. I wanted to set up a 100g quarantine tank so I swapped out the fx-5 for a new one. The 350g had a serious ammonia spike! so yes, the matrix is really really good, much better than bioballs imo.
