if a heat rock shorts out it will burn your animal bad

Yes...especially to animals that cannot sense heat on their bellies. Also, they are a fire risk depending what kind of substrate you use. It doesn't take much to get some newspapers burning.

I had one burn the hell out of my sav when I was young, very sad.A freind burned his BP on one as well. Both lived but scared for life.Best thing to do is this,,,,,,,,,,,and Im a pro at this so only listen to me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,this will make the heat rock better in many ways,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,cut the cord off and throw it in your garden. When you cut the cord, make sure its unplugged, lol.

Animals that cannot sense heat on their bellies?

I was under the impression that they can....They will burn themselves, b/c if they don't, they cannot digest their food.

Leos and other belly warming reptiles cannot tell the temp of the heat under their bellies. Heat rocks are known to short out and the leos end of cooking themselves.

Wow, didn't know that they couldn't tell the temp on their bellies....

I concur that heat rocks are bad news. If you have one, I suggest unplugging it, cutting off the cord, and using it for a "regular" rock and save you and your animal a lot of strife.

Use any of the aforementioned alternatives instead.

Yeah...i've read several books on Beardies that all said they don't have the ability to sense heat on their bellies. I found a quote from one website that illustrates the point, "Bearded Dragons sense heat and light using a detector located on top of their heads. They are not as aware of heat coming from below and can badly burn their bellies without knowing it. For this reason we advise to not use a heat rock or place rocks too close to the basking light."

Which is why I rarely even use any form of belly-heating for our lizards; all lights from above.

Thats really really interesting, thanks guys!
