hey guys.

i have 55G. standard size tank where my 5 checkerboard discus live in.. i have a heater that is screwing me around.. not giving the right temperature of the tank. it sometimes goes up and sometime goes low..

and it makes my discus stressed, i have 3 already died because of this. the other week, it goes really high.. and i toast my 3 and 5 survived.. now, when i checked it, it goes really low again.. i heated it, i think it's time for replacements..

the question is, which brand that we can trust that will recommend? i really need it right away.. i don't wanna kill my discus.. please include, how many watts and how many should i get for my 55G, i heard that 2 is good, but in what watt? the cheaper the better.. prefer to be submersible..

thanks for reading guys..!

i've always like second nature acura. You will need 300Watts

i too am pondering this question on my 55gal as well. I can tell you though a 200watt would be enough for your tank and i can also tell you to stay away from the Hagen Elite. Ive had 3 now that have cracked within the last 3weeks, and i know its not the fish doing it either.

If you need strict temps, then stay away from the "glass" heaters. Go with metal heaters that have temperature controllers on them. Cost about 3-4x the amount, but worth it.

However, here's a combo metal heater with a built in controller. Pretty cheap, don;t know it's effectiveness.

There's an old saying: You get what you Pay for....
I think that applies here.

i have had very good results with the ehiem jager heaters. and they are known for their accuracy. a buddy of mine is using 1 hydor theo heater in a 120 gal with 3 discus a small stingray, very large angel, some neons and some rumy nose tetras. his discus are laying eggs and seem very happy. he also had another 120 gal with 2 jager heaters (he only needs 2 in the winter) and 2 large stingrays. he says he likes the jager heaters better himself. hope you have some better luck

Given half a chance,yes.

I use Ebo Jager (glass) heaters and have had no problems.
What is the ambient temperature in the room where the tank is kept and what temp do you keep the tank?

My personal opinion is don't oversze the heater or go with two small heaters that are just adequate.

Edit: You don't hear about fish freezing anywhere near as often as fish frying.

Yeah, I like ebo jagers too.
quality heaters.

I agree. Jagers are the highest quality heaters on the market. If a person doubts it, then they have never used one. The only brand I trust with expensive fish, and I've used many, including titanium with Ranco controllers.
