Heater burn or disease?

I have seen a few heater burns and they look like this

If it was sand the marks would be more around the mouth area from digging

Thanks everyone for the valuable feedback, i have managed to avoid it for over a year but somehow they got burned last week, ill make the cover, and the water changes, anything else i need to do to cure them faster?
