Heater decisions...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used a single ETH 400w on my 110g tank and it did a great job!

I have since switched to a sump and have a couple old submersibles in the sump. I like this better than the ETH's because even the 5/8" ETH's required me to choke down the 3/4" tubing on my canister filter.

I have to 200 watt jagers in my 55 gallon sump with my 180 tank being held nicely at 81. Great heaters and out of view in the sump, can't go wrong with the price either.

I prefer the Eheim. But I do not think they are any better than the Fluvals.

I have a 120g (60x18x26) and had ran two 300 watt Hydor in-line heaters and absolutely loved the set up. I disconnected one to do some plumbing mods for a new 210g and an FX5 and found that the single had no issues keeping the temp stable at 80 deg. This was in line with a Cascade 1500 canister and a spraybar, which probably help spread the heated water a bit better, along with a powerhead inside the tank for circulation.

Anyway I recently pulled the other hydor out for my 210g project and replaced it with the Jager 300watt. I had to turn this thing WAY down. This single is more than enough to maintain temp. I believe that a single 250 watt jager would work just fine or a single Hydor 300 watt in line, unless you are in a really cold place.

Final plug for the Hydor: I was so impressed with how stable the temp was kept and the clean look of no giant glass tubes in the tank. I decided to custom plumb two of these in line with my FX5 on the 210g. Once you get heaters out of a tank you realize how much more realistic of a look you can achieve. Plus no more worries with big cichlids and pleco in tank burning themselves or breaking the glass heater.

Just fantastic.

One of those new 250w Eheim's wont turn off. lol

That is exactly what started to happen when I put the new 300watt Eheim into the 120g. Like I said I had to turn it WAY down. They claim it can do up to a 265g which I truly believe it can. I watch the heater and it barely even comes on and keeps the temp at 80 until it heats up and then it will take the tank to 80.7 until it cools back down. I wish I would have got a smaller one like the 250 watt which would have been about 2 1/4" shorter and still have been able to heat the tank. But no big deal i'm selling it off with the 120g when the210 is up and running.

I had it on its lowest setting for over an hour, tank water was 85.7.
It would not shut off.

I unplugged it.
