I would say it isn't optimal, but should work. The one problem is size it may not fit. I wouldn't worry about overheating unless you mess up setting the temp. larger heater will just heat the tank up faster to what ever the set temp is.

That is what I was trying to explain when I mentioned it will cycle on/off less. It will heat the water much much faster.
