Years ago I bought one of those cheapies and It popped open in the tank, fried all the fish, scorcthed a curtain and blew the main breaker for the house.
i have had a some what expensive heater malfunction on me
it was a titanium heater with the external thermostat

that is the kind i use. the titanium with the external thermostat. i found them to be verry acurate exept when i had a cat it would sometimes bump the controle nob and one time turned it way down. i came home and the tank was at about 67 degees F.
nope. i just sat there with a squirt bottle in a chair and every time one of my cats went behinde the tank i would squirt them. that lasted about 2 hours.
