Still saviing up for my 240Gal tank , nearly there just acouple of hundred to go , so while i am still saving i am doing some research on stuff to get , things like filters , lighting and heating but i am not 100% sure on what heating to look at IE, how many and how size in Watts to go for , at the moment i have a 300Watt in a 100gal tank so i was thinking on two 200Watts in the 240Gal or maybe two 300Watt in there , but i am not sure so please help .

Also if anyone can help will a Fx5 be enough for 240Gal with the fish that are in my Signature or should get two . ?

Plug your variables into this calculator: http://boonedocks.net/fishtank/ftweb.php

Round up and split the wattage in half if you are going to be using two heaters. It is not required but a good ideo to use a controller if using more than one heater.

ok thanks ill have a look now .

Any thought on filteing ?

i think , if i have done it correct i should have about 500Ws worth of heating for the tank , is that correct ?

Depends on your variables. Lowest room temperature? Highest desired tank temperature? Tank construction?

I run 250W on my 300 +200 sump in the Summer and 500W in the Winter months.

Although this Winter I'm going to see how the 250W does first and add another 250 if needed.

Lots of choices when it comes to filtration. Definitely look into building a wet/dry filter. Then you could add a canister or other type of closed loop filter system to polish the water.

When I used the calculators it was way high. I ended up buying twice the heaters I needed. On my 250 g tank in the winter I've got a 250 w Stealth heater and it keeps it constant at 80, the 125 g tanks have 200 w Stealths. It depends on what the room temp is, my room temp is normally around 76 degrees in the winter. I'ave got 6 or 7 Hydors that I won't even use, I hate em'. They won't shut OFF and the tanks were getting up over 87 degrees when the heater was set at 80. 2 200 w heaters would be good on your 240 g, that way if one fails you've got a back up.
As far as the FX5, I love all mine for my Oscar tanks. I think you'd need more than just 1 FX5 for the 240 g with that many fish in there. I've got an FX5 and 2 AquaClear 110's (500 gph) on my 250 g tank and it's working fine but I've only got an Oscar, a 3" Severum, 5" Green Terror and 6 3" SIlver Dollars. I assumed I'd have to add another FX5 when the juvies are grown but I'll play it by ear.

Thanks , do you think i could get away with just using one Fx5 for acouple of months the add enough one later on . ?

Yep, you bet. I got all 3 of mine on Ebay at the end of one of the many (constant) auctions for $200 each total including shipping. That was $100 cheaper than anywhere else I'd found them.

So two's better but i am ok with just one for a couple of months , and yep i have had a look Ebay and there around £160.00 , £200.00 cheaper than any shop i have seen them for .

Yea, you're fiine with one. I've just got one in each tank, keep meaning to pick up some more but haven't. I've got thermometers on all the tanks and they get checked all the time anyway. And it's not like it gets any colder than 76 in this house.
