Heater question on large tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've used nothing but a single 400w Hydor on my 225gal since I first set it up 6 years ago, and with an ambient temperature of 65-75F, the aquarium temp stays pretty stable at 78-80F.

Most people who have aquariums will typically only use a single heater without ever having any issues. I've done that through most of my time in the hobby. Nowadays, I play it on the safe side by having mutiple units connected to a controller just to give me extra insurance that my fish don't fry or go into a deep freeze due to a malfunctioning heater.

Ive been using one of these for a year and have had no problems at all, love it. http://www.amazon.com/Finnex-Digita...F8&qid=1422470827&sr=8-1&keywords=800w+heater
I wish i could say the same. I own about 7 of the finnex digital controllers. so far 3 of them have malfunctioned the controller says that the temp is 85 degrees so the heaters stayed off for a while when i felt the water during a feeding it felt much cooler than usual. so i checked it with another digital thermometer and it was 71 degrees!!! until the past few weeks i was very pleased with the unit.

All electronics can or will ultimately fail, that's why you gotta have a safeguard. My 180 in my unheated basement runs on 3 heaters hooked up to a controller and is monitored by a conventional and digital(with high/low temp alarms) thermometers.

The problem with multi heaters is it's hard to get them exactly the same temp

The higher set one will be on all the time and the others never on

It's best to use a controller for more than 1 heater

Then buy heaters without a stat or turn them up full and plug them into the stat and set the temp by that

With a sump you also need a controller and put the heaters in the sump and the controller probe in the main tank

Any reccomended controllers or are they all about the same?
A lot of people swears by Ranco since its made for industrial application, but I've been using multiple units of inexpensive Finnex and they've served me well.

They are all fairly much the same but different ones are rated at different wattage

I use the weipro ones as they let you run 1000w - 2000w of heaters

It's best to buy a high wattage unit so if you upgrade tank in the future it's less kit to have to re buy

Never looked into those Richard but it's a good idea.

I run multiple heaters in the tank and I agree with your comments - half of them are broke and stay on permanent I just control it via hma and turn them off in summer

No point in turning heaters off as that's what the thermostats for

Just buy a controller much More simple to control no need to get wet if you want to adjust the temp it's just the flick of a switch

9x out of 10 if a heater brakes it's the thermostat that goes so if you buy heaters without a stat then less chance of them failing

I have 4 x Aqua medic 500w stainless steal heaters they are 5 years old and still going strong

If you have heaters with thermostats you want to run via a controller just turn them up full and plug them into the controller
