HEATER QUESTION

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A burn occurs when the fish settles on the heater.

I've got rays (and yes, one got burnt), and until I went to a sump system, I just kept them high in the water column with a powerhead moving water across them. Worked great, and the rays never had another problem.

Hope that helps,
/Kris

either put the heater in the sump or buy or make a heater guard-Anne

unfortunatly a ray will use it to stand on or climb between it and the glass. They don't quite understand why their face is burning and it can get pretty nasty sometimes. Either build a sump and put it in there, throw some pvc with a large gap so water can pass through or buy a guard. you definatly will have problems with an exposed heater! :mwave:

Gotcha. I got the heater insert for my filter on the habitat I'm setting up, but I had gotten to thinking that I might have put too much effort into it. Glad to hear it wasnt a waste! :)

i agree with waldo
what i did is:
1) bought a 15 inch piece of pvc 2 inch in diameter
2) drilled a bunch of holes in it" a ton of small holes"
3) put a power head on one end and cap the other end ... have the flow going in side it.
4) and presto you have a heater guard

and the pvc is to heavy to float! :naughty:

I think we have some corner boxes used for petco tanks. Talk with exoticaquatix@comcast.net to see if he'll sell you one for cheap. Just set it in your tank and put a heater, media and powerhead in there and presto rays are safe.
