What would be appropriate sized heaters for a 220 gallon tank? It'll have a FX5 canister and a 40/55 gallon sump. So it'll be about 242 gallons of water total. I want the temp around 84f.

What would be an appropriate sized return pump? Would like medium to high flow

You could use 800 to 1200 gph for med to high flow. Keep in mind, that would be after figuring head height.

I would say two 300 watt heaters should do it. However, if you are like some of the Ohio people that I have stayed with that insist on keeping your house in the 50's during winter I would go with 4 heaters.

in the winter the house is no cooler than 60f. I may go with a higher wattage because the lone 300w heater can't keep my tank above 82-83 right now

are won brothers heaters reliable? I was thinking of using a 500w along with my current 300w heater, I think theo also makes a 500w heater

Go titanium and get a 1K watt'er!

I would go with 2 300-350watt heaters. For one you will have redundancy and if one sticks on it doesn't nuke your tank near as fast as a 1000watt heater

1000W heaters utilize a temperature controller. There's almost zero risk associated with them locking in the on position. Infact, you can use heaters that have broken and stay on all the time with a controller. The controller does the on/off work.
Extra point for controllers there.

Is the controller built in or external? Sorry for the noobish question, but I don't use heaters (only about two weeks out of the year). I'm setting up a 360g SW/reef and need something more reliable than my cheapies that I have been using.

Sorry for the delay.....
The unit I have has an external controller. Heaters plug right into the side of the controller. From the controller, you have about a 6' probe that you can place a farther away from the heaters. It works great. I bought mine at www.Jehmco.com, but it is a Ranco Controller. They are well thought of. I bought the heaters somehwere else because Jehmco was out of stock. They are working very well. I think they are blueline heaters.
