Heater(s)/return pump size for 220g tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 200 gal (7x2x2) and a 50gal sump (~20 gal full). I use a Mag 12 that puts out about 1200 gph with 2 ft of head and an eshopps PF-1200 overflow rated at 1000 gph. I use some of the excess flow from the pump to go through a 36W UV sterilizer and algae scrubber.

Sorry for the delay.....
The unit I have has an external controller. Heaters plug right into the side of the controller. From the controller, you have about a 6' probe that you can place a farther away from the heaters. It works great. I bought mine at www.Jehmco.com, but it is a Ranco Controller. They are well thought of. I bought the heaters somehwere else because Jehmco was out of stock. They are working very well. I think they are blueline heaters.

I have been using Ranco temperature controllers on my tanks for years and I have never had an issue with them. I have never used titanium heaters though, no particular reason I haven't. I have just always used visitherm heaters. They are cheap and they do the job.

How do you only have 2 ft of head height from the sump to the tank? Is your sump beside or behind your tank? I have about 10 - 12 feet of head height once accounting for the height of the tank and the connectors (90's, ball valves, t's, etc).
