From your comments, I assume that you have the kind of heater that mounts to the top of the tank, perhaps with a screw? I didn't know they still made those. Anywho, as you are getting an oscar, I strongly suggest that you get a non-glass, fully submersible heater (marineland's stealth is good, cheap and available).
