This is what I use and no more yanking on the plug. Most electronic stores have them for $25 or less.

Walmart less than 10 bucks.

i always unplug my heaters, since i've heard too many horror stories about what could happen if you don't... i.e. shattered glass heater inside of a fish tank...

Yeah, if you are going to expose the body of the heater to air then unplug. If not, then there's no need to.

i did find the other day, than even after i unplugged the heater it was still getting hotter and hotter, as it was in contact with the air. So even after unplugging, the heating elements are still hot and need to cool down, otherwise you may still find you have a shattered heater when you put it back in the water.

i have 3 spare heaters that i dont want to sell incase i break any of them.

I unplug as well. I forgot one time, had a large titanium heater so my butter would break it, well I started to hear something odd like cracking, then I heard something hit the rocks in the tank, then started to see smoke, I got nervous and switched the powersupply off, then looked at the heater, the bottom part fell off, titanium rod was cracked and at the top, the wire was melted and so what the whole top part and it smelled bad. That thing was $65.

That's why I turn it off when I start to do a WC. I take my time doing WC's so it's cool by then. But I agree if you turn it off right before it goes out of the water it'll take some time to cool down so do it ahead of time folks.

I fixed that by putting my heaters below the halfway point in my tanks. Then I do 50% water changes and the heaters stay nice and wet. I actually use the heater as my indicator to stop draining.

I run my two filters, heater and air pump to one surge protector. All I do is flick the breaker switch off in right before a w/c, then flick it right back on after.........
