Heaters for big tanks.

You could put that white styrafoam insulation around the rubber maid and get a stock water heater that floats and put a guard around it to protect the fish. The only thing is I don't know how warm it will make the tank that heater may make it to warm or not enough and I am not sure if they are adjustable.

You could switch up to a titanium and a controller.

I saved my water bed heater and built it underneath the plastic pond that I built out back into my pool deck. This is TOTALLY outdoor and has remained uncovered all winter and the water temperature has remained steady at 20 Celsius. I do have two 300 W generic internal heaters in there also.

Like I say, it has been a B.... of a cold winter but my outdoor pond (~160G) has yet to drop below 20 C.

One major drawback that I have encountered is the need to add water two to three times weekly now from evaporation into freezing ultra dry air!

I had 3 300 watt on my 220 in my basement and I could never get the tank about 76-78 with both the tank and the sump covered. When I had the sump uncovered I was getting about 74. My problem was my glass sump, when I put a thermomitor in the acrylic tank and glass sump, the sump was colder.

Pick of tank is in my gallery. I'm not sure how to upload pictures to forum. Hit the insert image and it wants a web link. pics are on my hard drive. But yea i'm going with an inline 1000 watt I think on this. The link I put up sells heaters from 1k to 18k watts. The titanium with control would be cool but I've never had one of those. What is a good place to order them from / also good brand.

CHeck kensfish.com for a heater. You should at least use some styrofoam board for a cover. It would be easy to take off and put on whenever you are down there. It would save a lot of heat. Insulation is your friend.

Buy a 1000 watt titanium heater with a controller. Also wrap your rubbermaid container with the pink insulation from home depot or lowes. I use 2 1000 watt heaters and insulation on my 700 gallon stock tank in the garage and when it was 19 F in the garage the tank was still at 81 F. Now the weather is a constant 60 F and the tank heaters barely even turn on.
