I mean insulate the pond really well. The first time I set up my pond I didn't use any insulation and my electric bill doubled keeping it at 78 room temp was 70 the heater was running prob 90% of the time. And That was with a cover on it. When I redid the pond because of a fryed pump I put 2" of pink foam insulAtion on the bottom and wrapped it in faced R22 insulation. And made a cover out of 1" foam. Now I set my temp to 80 and the heater is off 98% of the time

Heres how I heat my set up and a few random pics. Its 8'x2' with a 4500gph pump. Its wrapped in insulation, with 2" of foam underneath. The Filter is a 60gal trash can filled with scrubbies. Those pipes are the spray bar. Always maintain perfect water. The filter also does a good job of keeping the water warm. I use a titanium 1000 heater thats on maybe 5% of the time max because of the insulation
Well I cleaned out all the dollar generals and family dollar stores every week in 30mile radius of my house for a month. Actually still filling it up. Could use prob 10gal more. And the heater is beafore the pre filter. So it's in the actual pond. That way it heats the water before going to the bio filter sense bacteria grows better at temps over 80. And the filter even helps heat it a little sense it's a drip tower but completely sealed against outside atmosphere so when water evaporates in there it condinsTes on the top and makes heat as a bi product. It stays at 80 with only using the heater about 5% of the time. Kinda ghetto looking but it works well and best of all it's cheap.
